2009 was a challenging year for all investors ... and many of our donors worked with us to flow a grant through to a local charity outside of their endowment fund. Close to $90,000 was granted as flow-throughs, providing vital support to local agencies:
$80,000 to Whitby Public Library Archives - Our anonymous donors, passionate about history, continue to provide this important funding to help the library digitize their historical photograph collection.
$2,000 to Feed the Need in Durham - Through the community foundation's Dyall/Hutton Family Fund, this grant helped to ensure food banks had food for those in need at Christmas time.
$4,000 to Oshawa Community Health Centre - Funding from our Live Your Dream Fund purchased a computer for the Hope Centre for Learning at the Oshawa Community Health Centre.
$2,000 to Parkwood Estates - Funding from the J.Donald Thornton Memorial Fund and Lafarga Family Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government of Canada under a special program for urgent capital restoration of historical buildings.
$1,500 for the Grace Fund bursary at University of Ontario Institute of Technology- A grant from the Lafarga Family Fund has enabled this year's Grace Fund bursary to be awarded to Heather Oerlemans, a student in the Faculty of Education. The bursary is available to a female Durham Region resident studying full time at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (in first year).
$500 to Y's Wish Shelter (YWCA Durham) - The Lafarga family, through their fund with Durham Community Foundation provided this grant to help Y's Wish Shelter continue to support abused women and their children with counselling, referrals, advocacy, transitional support and children's advocate workers.
