Durham Community Foundation is a vital link between caring community members and local causes that matter. To date, we have donated $800,000 to more than 100 charities in the Region of Durham, impacting thousands of lives.

Ajax Community Fund supports needs and projects specifically in Ajax. Created initially by Ajax Town Council, citizens are growing and building the fund to ensure sufficient investment revenues to support community needs.

Amanda Sarah Heron Fund honours a special young woman who died tragically in 1998. Family and friends remember Amanda on special occasions with a gift to this Fund. It is through grants such as last year’s to Windreach Farm’s therapeutic riding program, that Amanda’s loving spirit lives on.

Art of Transition Culture Fund established in 2011, the fund supports arts and culture in Durham Region.

Barry Jackson Memorial Fund created by Dr. Jackson’s family as a tribute to the many lives he touched during his career as Chief Psychologist with the Durham District School Board. The fund will work with the Ontario Endowment for Children and Youth, to encourage children and youth to participate in healthy and safe physical activity, recreation or cultural programs.

Bernie’s Legacy established by Janet & Alex Georgieff to honour her father. This fund will support mental health issues, an important issue to Janet, her late father, and her family.

Clarington Fund was created by a former councillor to support charitable projects within the Municipality of Clarington.

Colleen Fund founded by Durham Medical to remember Colleen Marie Elizabeth Hogan. Her work ethic and fondness for kids (especially those with special needs) were among her many contributions as a staff member of Durham Medical for more than 15 years. This fund will help benefit children’s educational programs or programs for children with special needs.

Deohaeko Support Network Fund supports Deohaeko Support Network, a group of Durham Region families dedicated to ensuring individual members with disabilities live rich and contributing lives. The following named funds honour specific individuals and groups: Jon Bennett Fund, Caroline Dionne Fund, Robert Salmers Fund, Supporters of Deohaeko Fund, and Tiffany Dawe Fund.

Dyall/Hutton Family Fund. John and Jill created this fund as a way of providing continuing support to the community.

Evelyn Burden Music Bursary Fund honours an Oshawa resident who believed that all children should have the opportunity to take piano lessons. Selected grade 4-8 students are provided with lessons each year.

Fraser Legacy Fund was initiated as a Christmas gift by Carlee Fraser to her parents. The Fraser family and Fraser Ford have been extensively involved throughout Durham Region and look forward to creating a lasting legacy that benefits youth.

F.W. Kitchen Family Trust Fund established in memory of Mr. Kitchen, an Oshawa citizen and community supporter.

Garritano Bros. Fund Matt and his brother Alfredo have continued their outstanding philanthropic contributions, by creating this fund to support local charities.

George and Jean Lofthouse Fund established by Mary Lofthouse and Jean Keane as a tribute to their parents. Founder of Whitby’s Lofthouse Brass Manufacturing Inc., George and his wife Jean were very active in the community.

Grace Fund helps women from Durham Region realize their dream of a university education by providing an annual bursary to a University of Ontario Institute of Technology student.

Hawkshaw Family Fund is in memory of the parents of Ron Hawkshaw and his sister, Sharon, this fund will enable children, whose family cannot otherwise afford the fees, to participate in recreational hockey.

J. Donald Thornton Memorial Fund Remembering a longtime Oshawa resident, who dedicated his volunteer efforts to a wide variety of community organizations. Each year, Mr. Thornton’s wife, Joan, volunteers with Durham Community Foundation to allocate grants to the different community needs.

Jim Flaherty Fund Jim Flaherty’s commitment to our community and country was profound. Durham Community Foundation is privileged to honour his legacy by establishing a permanent endowment fund that benefits current and future generations throughout the Region of Durham. In 2015, our St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, raised $20,000 for the Jim Flaherty Endowment Fund You can make a contribution to the fund at any time through Canada Helps, be sure to designate your donation to the Jim Flaherty Endowment Fund. Decisions with respect to granting priorities in the region will be reviewed annually by Christine Elliott and her sons. Our Grants Committee will evaluate and determine the successful charity recipient on an annual basis.

Jim Souch Memorial Fund Created with Jim’s generous gift of a life insurance policy … an example of his dedication as a respected businessman and community leader.

Jim Witty Scholarship Fund Honours Jim Witty’s seventeen years in elected office with scholarships presented each year to one or two Ajax students attending the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT)

Joe & Donna Dickson Fund is building with the proceeds of the annual Dickson golf tournament.

Lafarga Family Fund Gifts received from family and friends recognizing special occasions.

Live Your Dream Fund Created to “help charities live their dream”.  Ian Burns and Shelley Johnston, of The Pension Specialists recognize the importance of helping others and providing assistance to those less fortunate. With donations to their fund, Ian and Shelley are able to provide funding to a number of local charities.  The assets of the fund are invested and the interest is paid out annually to local charities.  This fund will run in perpetuity.

Madison Alexander Fund for Single Parents Inspired and launched by Tamara McKee to help single-parent families on their journey toward understanding, independence and fulfillment.

Melody Crawford Fund in memory of Melody Crawford.

Morrison Anniversary Fund Created to celebrate Bill & Mary’s 25th wedding anniversary.

Ontario Endowment for Children and Youth in Recreation Fund Established in partnership with the Province of Ontario this fund encourages and supports participation by children and youth in healthy and safe physical activity, recreation, or cultural programs.

Pebblestone Multi-Services Inc. Fund Supports women and children in Durham.

Professional Engineers Ontario – Lake Ontario Chapter Fund Supports a variety of charities.

Reg & Lorna Braid Seniors Fund ensuring seniors across Durham Region have the assistance they need in future, to access medical appointments, get projects completed at home, and access other services they need anywhere in the region. What a wonderful legacy!

Sanderson Family Fund Gifts received from family and friends recognizing special occasions.

Stanley E. Lovell Family Fund A lasting tribute to Mr. Lovell, a long-time community volunteer, dedicated business leader, now retired. Lovell Drugs, the oldest independent drug store chain in Ontario, and family-owned for over 100 years, was established by Mr. Lovell’s father.

Todd McNabb Memorial Scholarship Todd McNabb was a coach in the minor hockey community in Ajax and Pickering for over ten years.  Honoring his passion and desire for youth to embrace an extracurricular activity like hockey to build character and create friendships for a lifetime, the Todd McNabb Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014. Available to a student graduating from a high school in Ajax and entering their first year of a post-secondary education program, this $1,000 scholarship requires participation in minor hockey for a minimum of 3 seasons and also encourages strong academic achievement, engagement in extracurricular activities and active involvement in the community.

Terry James Volunteer Scholarships Fund Terry James was a consummate community volunteer and champion of many important causes. The Terry James “Honour the Volunteer” Golf Tournament is held annually and funds raised go to Terry James Volunteer Scholarships; available to elementary and high school students across Durham, encouraging them to volunteer and contribute back to their communities.

Tunney Family Fund Created through the generosity of Catharine & Kevin Tunney who continue to be very involved in the community, sharing their expertise with many different organizations.”We are pleased to be able to give back to a community that has provided our family with a wonderful life and many opportunities.”

United Way of Durham Region Supports United Way’s Community Initiatives Program which assists grass root organizations with one time support for programs under development.

Whitby Public Library Archives Fund Created by an anonymous donor to support the archives. The donor’s vision is enabling the archives to be digitized and available electronically around the world. All members of the public are invited to support this endeavor.

YWCA of Durham Agency Endowment Helping sustain the YWCA’s work throughout Durham Region for years to come, grants from this fund support numerous YWCA projects impacting lives of women across the Region.
